Immediate Insurance & treatment is available after you’ve been in an accident.

Carol Robinson LLP

Did you know that there is insurance in Alberta that will cover treatment for any injuries you’ve had in an accident? IMMEDIATELY... without waiting for a settlement from the at fault party. This insurance is called accident injury benefits or “Section B” benefits and they are available to every Albertan injured in a car accident through your own insurance company, whether you are at fault or not. Section B Benefits will cover certain treatments such as physiotherapy, chiropractic, massage, dental treatments and most other medical expenses that are necessary as a result of your injuries. They will also cover disability if you are unable to work and even a weekly stipend if you are not employed outside of the home but are unable to do any of your usual housekeeping and childcare activities.

Section B Benefits are available for up to 2 years after your accident and will cover an initial 21 treatments for most injuries outright. After these 21 treatments, you will have to use your own extended benefits. When those run out, your Section B's will kick back in and pay for treatment not covered by your benefits. Physiotherapy will be covered for the full two years but there are limits on other treatment such as chiropractic ($1,000.00), massage ($350.00) and acupuncture ($350.00).

These benefits are usually easy to access as they are through your own insurance company. Most physiotherapists and other treatment providers can help you fill out the appropriate forms so that you can get access quickly after your accident.

However, insurance companies are not always clear as to what they must cover and when, and often try to cut you off from these benefits too early. They have also started offering “pay outs” for Section B Benefits — offering a lump time sum if you don’t continue to claim for the full 2 years. This is why it is very important to talk to a lawyer and get a full understanding of what the Section B insurance has to cover and how long they have to pay.

It is important to understand and use these benefits as they will be a big part of your journey to achieve your best possible recovery. At Robinson LLP, we are happy to help with your Section B Benefits to ensure that you are being treated fairly by your own insurance company as well as the at-fault rivers.
